Surgical Periodontics carries the highest weightage (approximately 20%), making it one of the most important areas to master. This reflects the exam’s strong focus on clinical decision-making, flap design, regenerative procedures, and surgical outcomes.
Non-surgical therapy and Implant-related topics (together ~30%) also form a significant portion of the exam, highlighting the importance of foundational periodontal care as well as implant maintenance and peri-implant disease management.
2. What is the core clinical area that must be mastered?
The exam assesses competence across four broad domains:
- Clinical expertise: periodontal diagnosis as per both old and new classification, non-surgical therapy (scaling and root planing), surgical procedures (flap surgery, regenerative and resective techniques), mucogingival surgery, and implant-related procedures
- Treatment planning and case management: comprehensive periodontal evaluation including mobility, furcation etc., risk assessment (as per Tonetti), staging and grading of disease as per new classification, sequencing of care, and interdisciplinary coordination (endo, prostho, ortho, oral surgery)
- Management of complications and outcomes: periodontal disease progression, particularly prognosis of clinical case scenarios, treatment failures, surgical complications, peri-implant diseases, and long-term maintenance protocols
- Current periodontics literature: evidence-based practice and awareness of advances in regenerative therapy, biomaterials, and implant dentistry
3. Which textbooks are recommended by the official bodies for Exam preparation?
The following references are highly recommended and align with the exam syllabus:
- Newman and Carranza's Clinical Periodontology and Implantology (14th Ed)
- Lindhe's Clinical Periodontology and Implant Dentistry (7th Ed)
- Carranza's Essentials of Clinical Periodontology (An Integrated Study Companion)
- The Perio Handbook: The Complete Guide to Modern Periodontic
- Plastic-esthetic Periodontal and Implant Surgery (Zuhr & Hurzeler)
