What is the Membership of the Faculty of Dentistry (MFD Exam)?

The MFD (Diploma of Membership of the Faculty of Dentistry) is awarded by the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI). To be awarded this membership, you are required to pass the MFD Part 1 and MFD Part 2 exams. Having an MFD RCSI post nominals after your name helps with selection for specialist training, better job opportunities and potentially bigger patient-base.

How is the exam taken?

The examination takes the form of an online exam that is 3 hours long for MFD Part 1 and 90 minutes long for MFD Part 2. It can be attended from home. A good quality internet connection with an internet speed of a minimum of 2MBps, laptop, working webcam, microphone and speakers are necessary.

What is the format of the exam?

The MFD Part 1 format consists of

375 True/ False MCQs (there are 75 stems with 5 parts each which are either true or false)
33 Single Best Answer questions, each consisting of a “best” or most appropriate answer.
